Tea, it’s the worlds most consumed beverage, well after water of course. With so many varietals – black, white, green, and herbal – there’s a tea out there for everyone; health nuts, and caffeine addicts alike. Originating in the southwest part of China, tea has been drunk by people for centuries. It’s also really good for you with lots of antioxidants (flavonoids), and herbal teas have been shown to have various medicinal properties as well. For instance, chamomile tea may help complications from diabetes, like the loss of vision and nerve and kidney damage, and help stunt the growth of cancer cells.
While some people might snub their nose at tea today, preferring coffee, I’m much more of a tea drinker than a coffee drinker. Coffee is so boring! But there’s so many teas I can choose from in the morning to wake me up and help me start my day. From my go to black breakfast tea (with milk and honey), to green tea (when I’m on a health kick), as well as chai tea and the occasional white tea. So much more variety to chose from, as opposed to espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos (all of which tastes the same to me…like coffee).
One of my favorite things about tea, are the British traditions relating to it. From elevenses, to afternoon tea, and high tea. Elevenses, is essentially a light morning snack (usually at 11, hence the name) with scones or a biscuit, with tea. Afternoon tea is actually what we think of when we think of “tea time”. It’s when you have a “light” repast with finger sandwiches, cookies and scones. High tea, is actually when people would grab a cup of tea after work, along with a heartier quick meal, like a meat pie.
One of my favorite spots for in NYC to grab a bite, and have a pot of tea is Alice’s Tea Cup. There are several locations, each one unique in their own way, but what makes them so much fun is their Alice In Wonderland theme, and delicious scones! One of my favorite things to see there is when a little girl is given little fairy wings and “fairy dust” (glitter) to wear while they enjoy their meals.
