Every year my family gives a scholarship award at the Naval War College graduation in honor of both my grandfathers who were in the Navy. This year I was the sole family representative who could attend the graduation and have the honor of presenting the award during the ceremony.

Our award is given out to a graduating member of the international staff college. This year 118 international officers representing 65 countries graduated the Naval War College as part of the international staff or command college.

Situated in Newport along the water, the Naval War College graduation is always a beautiful event to attend (especially when the weather is nice). This year’s distinguished guest was Congressman Steve Israel, U.S. Representative for New York’s 3rd District. He was presented with an honorary Masters of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. This year also sadly marked Rear Admiral Howe’s last year as President of the Naval War College.
